Best 2 Day Traditional Itinerary for Takayama, Gifu Prefecture
If you love being surrounded by mountains and lots of water (rivers😂🌊) Takayama is a great place to put on your itinerary!
Located in Gifu prefecture, central Japan, Takayama is a small city were you can enjoy staying in Japanese traditional Inns, relaxing at a hot spring (Onsen♨️), trying delicious Japanese Sake at the various local breweries and walking around the old part of the town where you can find all kinds of delicious foods and Japanese traditional crafts!
We just had an amazing time there with Ernesto and Martha visiting us from Colombia! 🇨🇴🥳
After our team in Beyond Travel took care of all the reservations, we set off from Tokyo to Nagoya, using the Shinkansen, and then from Nagoya to Takayama by Limited Express train! It took us around 4 hours to get there, although it felt very short as the scenery traveling in between mountains and rivers was astonishing!

We arrived to Takayama Station and headed to the meeting place where the staff from “Wanosato” picked us up to bring us to our accommodation!
The entrance of the Inn was beautiful! A wooden old looking door followed by a road covered with leaves and surrounded by trees! We quickly got off the Van and walked towards the reception, where we met Rin, Wanosato’s super kind staff who welcomed us warmly!
After welcoming us with a warm cup of tea and traditional Japanese suits, Ernesto and Martha were taken to their respective cabin.
It was a Japanese traditionally built house (Gassho Zukuri), with a beautiful interior, tatami floor, private bath and a big window facing the Miya River! Ernesto and Martha were able to wear some traditional Japanese clothes called Yukata and Hanten!
For dinner Wanosato offered a mouth-watering menu, consisting of locally made fruit drinks, season vegetables prepared in all sorts of ways, fresh sashimi, fish cooked at the traditional Japanese sunken hearth fired with charcoal, and of course the well known high quality Hida beef. (There was much more!)
Following that, they were able to enjoy the private hot springs! 🤩 What a great way to relax…
Thank you so much to Wanosato staff for giving us such a great welcome and being part of this amazing experience!
Ernesto and Martha spent one night at the Inn, and the next day we headed to Shirakawa-go, a historic village nominated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our staff rented a car on their behalf and drove them to their destination. What an incredible road trip we had 😆
Finally, on our last day we were able to come in contact a bit more with the local people from the old town in Takayama, walking around the different craft stores and sake breweries there.
We all fell in love with Takayama, its nature and specially, the amazing experience of staying in a Japanese traditional Inn.
If you are thinking on visiting Japan, we would love to help you arranging your trip! 😆🎉
Looking forward to hearing from you! 😆
